Pieceful Mountain Quilt Guild 2009 Challenge Going GREEN

Quilters were some of the first “recyclers” on the planet, so here’s your challenge for 2009! Make a wall hanging with the theme “I’m Going Green.”

CHALLENGE RULES:

1. Purchase an “I’m Going Green” kit Mountain Holly Quilt Shop for less than $10. This will include one piece of 18” x 24” Dream Green batting and 3 fat quarters consisting of Maywood Studios Shadow Play 513-GX, Benertex Reflections Sage and RJR Textures in Nature. You may also purchase your supplies at Country Stitches. They will have Kyoto Bamboo Blend batting. The fat quarters will be Robert Kaufman Marbleous!, Moda Marble 574617 and Jenny Byer Sand and Sky 4795.

2. Make a quilted wall hanging NO LARGER THAN 18” X 24” which includes the following: a. a top that is pieced and/or appliquéd using recognizable portions of ALL three fabrics from either quilt shop. You may add more fabric if you like, preferably from recycled materials or from your stash! b. the DreamGreen batting provided in the kit from Mountain Holly or the Kyoto Bamboo batting from Country Stitches c. a backing.

3. Quilt the wall hanging by hand, by machine, or by using ties.

4. Bind or otherwise finish the edges of the wall hanging.

5. Communicate the theme “I’m Going Green” to tell the viewer how you are working toward reducing, re-using and/or recycling to help the environment.

6. Embellish the quilt top with at least two, or more, of the following: a. recyclable materials, such as clean pieces of paper or plastic; b. materials that would typically be thrown away but are re-usable, such as bottle tops, twist ties, nylon netting used to bag apples, onions or other produce, etc. c. found objects, perhaps from the workbench, such as nuts or bolts. Note: These are examples, not have-to’s. We know you can come up with even better ideas. Do NOT embellish with any food or food products.

7. Attach 2 hanging loops on each end of your wall hanging top using re-usable objects, such as ribbon, soda can pull tabs, twist ties, etc.

8. Complete the “I’m Going Green” entry form and attach it with a safety pin to the back of your wall hanging for identification purposes. Also make and attach your own label to the back of the wall hanging, but do NOT put your name on the front of the art work.

9. The quilts will be due at the December Guild meeting.
